Grades 9-12 Hinase is living in a world where everyone is born nonbinary and on their twelfth birthdays, people choose a gender. But Hinase is different. They didn't choose a gender at 12, and now they're nearly 18. Hinase doesn't feel strongly aligned with either gender and wants to continue living without being confined. Everything gets complicated when both of Hinase's best friends, one guy and one girl, confess their romantic feelings for Hinase and their desire to solidify Hinase's decision to choose a gender and enter a relationship with them. Told with beautiful and thoughtful splashes of blue throughout, this story raises some interesting questions about identity and gender, as well as societal pressure for romantic entanglements in a teen's formative years. Yoshimura illustrates Hinase's androgyny well by highlighting masculine features in certain scenes and showing a feminine side in other scenes. The inclusion of blue in an otherwise black and white story could be great fodder for color-theory conversation and analysis in art classes and book clubs. This series could appeal to fans of I Want to be a Wall, I Hear the Sunspots, or Our Dreams at Dusk.
