A ghostly estate. A handsome caretaker hiding a secret. And the intrepid Hyacinth Bell, who is set on solving the mystery of both.
1887, the Cornwall coast
For years, rumors have flown through the village of Suttonsbury about Ashthorne Hall—that its occupants hoard pirate treasure, that a ghost walks its halls—but botanist Hyacinth Bell cares only about the estate's extensive, one-of-a-kind orchid collection. As an independent woman, she is eager to focus on her career, even if it means waiting to pursue a romantic relationship. After all, love—like an orchid—must be nurtured and tended before it can bloom.
What she doesn't expect is to be swept away by Lucas Harding, the manor's caretaker, upon their first meeting. He is handsome and charming, and the connection between the two is nearly instantaneous. Hyacinth is certain this autumn will be the season that everything good in her life takes root.
But then strange things start happening in the seemingly empty halls of the estate: unexplainable noises, items appearing, then disappearing from her room, threatening messages, and glimpses of a woman in white who vanishes into the dark. Lucas dismisses Hyacinth's worries, insisting that there is no ghost at Ashthorne Hall, but Hyacinth suspects he is withholding information and decides to investigate the mystery herself.
Armed with little more than her instincts and her courage, Hyacinth must venture deep into the shadows of Ashthorne Hall to uncover the truth Lucas is keeping secret before she herself falls victim to the dangers hidden in the estate.

When Hyacinth Bell travels to Ashthorne Hall, where she's been hired to care for a nobleman's extensive orchid collection, she discovers that her new home is rather foreboding and soon glimpses a figure in white on the estate. Could it be a ghost? She also meets the caretaker, Lucas Harding, and the two instantly develop a close romantic bond. Hyacinth is determined to figure out who Ashthorne Hall's ghost is, but her investigations lead her to realize there is someone much more sinister in the manor. Hyacinth suspects that Lucas knows something about the ghost and the intruder, but he is unwilling to trust her with his secret. After the greenhouse is broken into, with the plants uprooted and littered throughout the space, Hyacinth is willing to risk her safety to discover the culprit and unearth Lucas's secret at the same time. VERDICT In Anderson's (The Art of Love and Lies) latest, the ghost's tragic story, relayed through laments at the start of each chapter, and Hyacinth's quest to discover more about the ghost will take readers through a whirlwind of emotions, much more so than the rushed romance between Lucas and Hyacinth.--Eve Stano

Botanist Hyacinth Bell is an expert in the care of orchids and a decided novice in the swoons of the human heart. Her new position as greenhouse caretaker at the mysterious Ashthorne Hall introduces her to Lucas Harding, the charming groundskeeper, who is as forthright with his feelings as he is evasive about his past. Their budding romance is not enough to distract Hyacinth from the townspeople's warnings of spirits haunting Ashthorne Hall. Moaning walls, visions in white, and items appearing inside Hyacinth's locked bedroom compound the rumors of something afoot in the manor that is determined to get her attention. Set in 1887 along Great Britain's blustery southern coast, Anderson's latest, following The Art of Love and Lies (2023), is a gothic Proper Romance about remembrance, inner strength, and speaking one's truth boldly in the face of injustice. Anderson's haunting characterization brings Ashthorne Hall to life, and poetic laments between chapters enhance the the eerie tone and persistent intrigue. A cozy read celebrating the unexpected strength of a delicate heart when given the right circumstances to thrive.
