At the Death on Demand Bookstore - "the best mystery bookstore east of Atlanta" - somebody always seems to turn up dead. In Hart's latest installment, charming owners Annie and Max Darling return to investigate a mysterious death at an art gallery opening on their South Carolina island. When heiress and gallery owner Virginia Neville hosts a bash for an important new collection, she plans to announce her engagement to a much younger man. But then murder crashes the party, and Max is called in to investigate while Annie takes matters into her own hands. Virginia's family members are not the only suspects - someone close to Annie looks guilty as well. Series devotees will rejoice as Annie and Max's banter recalls the high jinks of Nick and Nora Charles.

This is another murder mystery in the series featuring amateur sleuth Annie Darling, owner of the Death on Demand Bookstore. In this story a portrait painter and local Lothario is found murdered at a posh event at which his engagement was about to be announced. Kate Reading reads this leisurely paced story with a breathless intensity. She has perfected the art of portraying whining, hysterical women, characters that abound in this novel. Reading gives the protagonist, Annie, a certain strength of character, but none of the characters portrayed feel like they belong on an island off South Carolina. The most fun in this story are the mystery quizzes posed to Annie by one of her most loyal customers. Carolyn Hart has loyal followers as well, and they will enjoy another mystery centered around a bookstore with an engaging name and engaging clientele. D.L.G. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine

Hart supplies superior cozy fare in her 14th mystery (after 2002's April Fool Dead) to feature amateur sleuth Annie Darling and her husband, Max. Everyone in the Low Country island of Broward's Rock, S.C., has been looking forward to the gala opening of a new art collection at the Neville Gallery, owned by heiress Virginia Neville, who intends to use the evening not only to dispel the foggy gloom of January on the island but also to announce her engagement to much younger artist Jake O'Neill. However, the party quickly ends when Jake turns up murdered. Max, deputized immediately to help, finds himself at cross-purposes with Annie, owner of the Death on Demand bookstore, who seeks to vindicate her friend who's the prime suspect. A fast-paced plot and a skillfully integrated sub-plot will keep the reader involved and guessing until the very end. Hart expertly handles numerous characters, notably Max's quirky, but lovable mother and Henny, Death on Demand's best customer and mystery expert, who plays a clever mind game with Annie. The interplay between Annie and Max enhances the plot, where in lesser hands it would become the focus. Those who appreciate crime fiction in the Agatha Christie Mousetrap
mold will also go for this superb whodunit. (Mar. 8)Forecast:A 14-city author tour, including a "wedding" cake and bubbles at each participating bookstore, will help bring in the crowds for Hart, who already has a high profile as a winner of Agatha, Anthony and Macavity awards and as a founder of Sisters in Crime.
