MacKenzie "Mac" Sinclair is cursed. So is the whole Sinclair family. Ever since her great-great-grandfather Peregrine returned from an expedition to the Maya ruins with half of a mysterious pendant–and without his partner, Liam O'Shea–they've been haunted by misfortune.
That's why Mac's beloved grandfather wants her to undertake a solo expedition . . . to return the pendant to the ruins of Tikal and to find a way to atone for whatever part Peregrine played in Liam's disappearance. But when Mac braves the hot, steamy, primitive jungle, something extraordinary happens: she blunders into the arms of an eerily familiar explorer.
Now she's in for more adventure than she bargained for. Because she's found Liam O'Shea . . . alive, well, and seductively real. In the year 1884.

In this romance that stumbles in the jungle but finds its heart in San Francisco, a young woman goes back in time to prevent a family curse, then falls in love with the man whose life she saves. MacKenzie "Mac" Sinclair is happy with her quiet life and museum job until her dying grandfather asks her to atone for a murder committed by her great-great-grandfather, a murder that burdened the family with a curse. She journeys to Mayan ruins and discovers the victim's bones, only to be swept back more than a 100 years by the mystical intercession of an ancient amulet. She awakens to meet sexy explorer Liam O'Shea, whom she duly saves from a murder attempt that may have been instigated by her ancestor, Perry Sinclair. At first, Mac spouts feminist cliches and snips at Liam like an adolescent, but the story gains momentum as they travel to San Francisco and she discovers that, by saving him, she may have prevented the marriage of her own great-great-grandparents. Thanks to Mac and her great-great-grandmother, Perry is exonerated, Liam is saved once again, and true love triumphs over time despite Victorian attitudes. Krinard also wrote Prince of Shadows and Prince of Wolves.

In an effort to remove a family curse and humor her grandfather, MacKenzie Sinclair heads for the Guatamalan jungle to return an ancient amulet that her great-great grandfather, Peregrine Sinclair, had taken from the Mayan ruins of Tikal during one of his expeditions. She ends up being catapulted back in time and into the life of Liam O'Shea, Peregrine's partner and a man who never returned from the original expedition. Effective characterization propels the occasionally complex story (there is a small white-slavery subplot) from the steamy Central American jungles to the restrictive, glittering 1884 San Francisco social scene with all the grace and sensuality readers have come to expect from Krinard. Krinard has written a number of alternative reality romances and is especially known for her sensual, mystical depiction of werewolves (Prince of Shadows, Bantam, 1996). She lives in Concord, California. (KR)
