When a ship's mutiny forces a young noble English couple out onto the remote African coast, their child is born into the wild. Their deaths a short time later leave the boy alone in the jungle wilderness—until a she-ape adopts him and raises him as her own.

Reluctantly accepted into the tribe by its fierce leader, Kerchak, the baby Tarzan must prove himself by learning the ways of survival in the jungle: how to talk with animals, swing through the trees, and fight the great predators. In time, his strength, courage, and human intelligence earn him a place as Lord of the Jungle. But when civilized men enter the jungle, Tarzan is forced to choose between two worlds.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale is both a reflection on civilization from an outside point of view and an exploration of the primal force within us all.

Tarzan fans can have their fill of jungle adventures. With impeccable diction and pacing, Ben Kingsley takes the material fairly seriously. In relating ludicrous episodes, such as Tarzan's rescue of the English gentlemen, Professor Porter and Mr. Philander, there is no hint of humor or amusement. Kingsley maintains detachment, which some may appeciate. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Shelly Frasier brings Burroughs's classic Tarzan adventures to life with an English boarding school style that fits the period of the story. After Lord Greystoke and Lady Alice's shipwreck and death, baby Greystoke is found by a fierce female ape, who carries him deep into the African jungle, where he grows up and learns to be Lord of the Jungle. Frasier captures Tarzan's tribal experiences with appropriate sound effects and seamless narration. She depicts Tarzan swinging through the trees and speaking guttural grunts with British-accented enunciation. Frasier's perfectly rendered delivery makes this classic well suited to long commutes. Also included is a companion ebook, PDF format, with automatic start-up instructions. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
