Broke up with, broke, and with a vicious case of writer's block, romance writer Gracie Landing is a hot mess. She can hardly be blamed for drinking one (or a few) too many cocktails when out with her besties in an attempt to cheer herself up. Sometime in the foggy wee hours, she recklessly emails her unrequited high-school crush, Colin Yarmouth, who is now a successful attorney harboring regrets of his own. When she receives an intriguingly friendly (not to say flirty) response, her acute embarrassment is overcome only by her fervent curiosity—what would a hottie like Colin be like as a grown up? The two forge an unlikely friendship that's unmistakably headed for more. Colin's tales of his own woeful break-up become fodder for Gracie's fertile imagination and her current work-in-progress takes off. With the deadline looming and her checking account dwindling, Gracie has no idea that borrowing Colin's story could wreak havoc on her life, her career, and her own chance at happily-ever-after...

Writer’s block leads to romance in Micciche’s adorable metafictional debut. Romance author Gracie Landing struggles to complete her second book, but inspiration comes from an unexpected place when her high school crush, attorney Colin Yarmouth, offers her the devastating details of his recent breakup with a woman he calls Elle to use as a plot point. Colin’s goal is to get a bit of revenge: he’ll let Gracie air his cheating ex’s dirty laundry in hopes that she’ll happen across the book one day—but he never considers that Gracie and Elle might know each other. Due to a nickname mix-up, Gracie doesn’t realize that Colin’s ex is a power player in the publishing industry until she’s already made the woman the villain in her story, a move that threatens to end her career. This twist causes a rift in the budding relationship between Gracie and Colin. To win her back, Colin will have to take a page from the best romance heroes. The author lays on the humor by putting her charming characters in squirmingly awkward situations. With witty banter and a clever, self-aware plot, this romantic gem marks Micciche as a writer to watch. Agent: Elizabeth Copps, Copps Literary.

Kelli Tager and Nick Mondelli narrate a contemporary romance debut. Gracie is stuck with a bad case of writer's block and a recently quashed belief in romance. On a whim she emails her high school crush, Colin. Recently divorced, he is intrigued by Gracie's sense of humor, so the two continue writing. The stronger of the two narrators, Tager captures the hot mess that is Gracie's life, and her energetic pace keeps the story moving. Mondelli is believable as the easygoing lawyer Colin. His pleasant voice captures the personality traits of some secondary characters, as well. However, the timbres he gives them sound too similar to Colin's voice. Despite some flaws, the narrators' performances keep the listener entertained. A.L.S.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
